How Long Does Stamped Concrete Last?

Stamped concrete follows the same installation process as traditional concrete.

Near the end of the process, a pattern or design is stamped into the concrete and coloring is added before the surface of the concrete dries. The wide range of patterns and colors available in stamped concrete make the finished surface more interesting to look at and allow for more design options. Some stamped concrete is designed to mimic the look of stone pavers at a fraction of the cost of paver installation.

Longevity

In its infancy, concrete stamping sometimes resulted in premature cracking and a shorter concrete lifespan because it was difficult to ensure the entire surface was stamped to a uniform depth. This issue has been resolved and stamped concrete now lasts as long as traditional concrete -- 25 years or more when properly installed and maintained.

Sealant

Stamped concrete sometimes lasts longer than traditional concrete because of the sealant used to protect the stamped design and color. The same strategies used to prevent cracking and promote longevity in traditional concrete structures, such as proper base installation and expansion joints are used in stamped concrete as well. Stamped concrete may look chalky and faded when it needs to be resealed, but will be restored to its original luster and color when fresh sealant is applied, which should be done every three to four years.
