What are concrete overlays?

It’s not necessary to break up and replace your existing concrete slab for a beautiful, decorative finish. An overlay can restore concrete to like-new condition or transform drab, gray concrete with a brilliant pattern and/or color to add value to your home for a fraction of the cost of new concrete.

A concrete overlay involves preparing your existing concrete surface before laying new concrete on top of the slab or floor. The concrete overlay can be stamped, dyed, and stained to achieve a beautiful final result. The prep work is important to avoid delamination and ensure the overlay will last for many years.

Cement vs Polymer Overlays

Cement-based overlays are sometimes used, but most systems today are polymer-based overlay residents mixed with sand, cement, and additives for improved appearance and performance. Polymer overlays are popular because they adhere well to existing concrete slabs and resist damage from UV exposure, extreme temperatures, abrasion, chemicals, and salt. Polymer overlays can be applied in very thin layers or up to several inches thick without delamination or failure, unlike standard concrete and cement mixes.

When Concrete Overlays Are Used

An overlay can add function as well as beauty to concrete. Here are some of the most common applications:

– Add color, texture, and pattern to an existing slab. Concrete overlays are popular for patios, pool decks, and driveways.
– Resurface interior concrete floors. Stains and dyes can be used to achieve beautiful colors and patterns.
– Smooth and level uneven concrete.
– Preserve the integrity of a concrete slab or pavement.
– Eliminate the need for replacing concrete.

Stamped Concrete Overlays

Stamped overlays look just like regular stamped concrete, but it is less labor-intensive. After the overlay is applied, it is imprinted with a texture or stamp. There are many types of stamped concrete styles that allow the concrete to mimic brick, stone, marble, slate, tile, wood, and more once stains are applied. Stamped overlays are popular for patios, driveways, walkways, and interior concrete floors.

Stained Concrete Overlays

Stained overlays are popular in commercial settings. This type of overlay involves applying a thin layer of polymer overlay over an existing concrete slab and chemically staining it with one or more colors to produce a natural-looking result.

Sprayed Concrete Overlay

A spray-down finish involves spraying the finish onto concrete with a power sprayer. This type of overlay produces a smooth finish, but a textured surface can be added as well to create a slip-resistant surface. This option is popular for pool decks. Decorative borders can also be added during application.

If your concrete slab or paths are worn-out or boring, a concrete overlay can reinforce and protect the underlying concrete while adding a fresh, decorative style you can appreciate for many years.
